Our Spot...where our love grew and where I said "yes"

The four white pillars that stand on Red Hill at Idaho State University have a significant meaning of education and commitment to the community. Yet, those four white pillars also hold another meaning to me personally….. they stand as a place where a friendship turned into love and the place where I said “yes” to a marriage between an ISU dancer and an ISU cheerleader, this is our story:

When my fiancé Cody and I met and first started dating, the pillars at ISU quickly became known to us as “our spot” and the place where we could go and open our hearts to one another apart from the world and above the busy world of college life and the life of his cheering and my dancing. We would go up there in the evening, watch the sunset, talk, laugh, cry on each other’s shoulders, and look at the infinite lights in the Pocatello valley for hours at a time.

On Labor Day 2008, he picked me up in the morning and I was excited for my day at the Blackfoot Fair with him. All ready to go, he insisted that we stop at Staples and buy a digital camera. I didn’t understand the urgency behind the purchase but he explained that they were “on sale” and he needed it for his program at school. After buying the camera, and him making sure it worked he wanted to go to our spot since we hadn’t been there since school started. Loving our time that we spend at the pillars, I agreed and we headed up to our spot before the fair.

The morning was crisp and a little breezy and after we made the small hike up to the pillars we were already cold. We quickly sat down on our usual step and began to talk and take pictures with the new camera. After a little time spent up there, I was extremely chilly, the wind was bothering me, and I was really anxious to get going; yet he insisted that we take more pictures and stay just a “little bit longer.” He finally sat down next to me again and said that he was holding back tears….at that moment I knew…. he got down on one knee and he proposed with the presence of the pillars above us and all the memories of the many moments we had spent up there. With all my dreams from when I was a young girl coming true, I said “yes.”

Since then, we have continued going to school, Cody has continued cheering, I have continued dancing, and we are planning and patiently awaiting June 27th, 2009 when we come together in the presence of God, family, and friends and become one in marriage. The night before our wedding we are planning on returning to the pillars and we will always remember the day I said “yes.”
