The four white pillars that stand on Red Hill at Idaho State University have a significant meaning of education and commitment to the community. Yet, those four white pillars also hold another meaning to me personally….. they stand as a place where a friendship turned into love and the place where I said “yes” to a marriage between an ISU dancer and an ISU cheerleader, this is our story:

When my fiancé Cody and I met and first started dating, the pillars at ISU quickly became known to us as “our spot” and the place where we could go and open our hearts to one another apart from the world and above the busy world of college life and the life of his cheering and my dancing. We would go up there in the evening, watch the sunset, talk, laugh, cry on each other’s shoulders, and look at the infinite lights in the Pocatello valley for hours at a time.

On Labor Day 2008, he picked me up in the morning and I was excited for my day at the Blackfoot Fair with him. All ready to go, he insisted that we stop at Staples and...

Lee and I met in early December (2003) after he just returned from basic training. Christmas Eve was the first time we had hung out. I think he felt sorry for me since I was from Vegas and couldn’t go home yet due to work and didn’t want to me spend the night alone. After that night we spent every day together except the week I went home after Christmas to see my family. I was determined not to get involved with anyone as I was going to move back home in June after my first year at ISU. In early February I finally gave in and decided that I would just enjoy the time we had together as I had fallen for him despite my best efforts to not let him in my heart he managed to find a way. February 29th he got put on alert with the Idaho Army National Guard and that night our lives changed forever. I realized that I didn’t want to be without him and couldn’t imagine my life with him not a part of it. I still remember his exact words, “I will put a ring on your finger tomorrow.”

He gave me the option to see other people...

‘Our’ Little Hill Top

I spent the summer of ’05 working at the tube rental stand in a small resort town. Lazy days helping tourists pick out floating tubes, explaining river etiquette, rules and stressing caution to tourists and regulars alike and yes, doing what most 17 year old blonde girls do best – wearing flirty swim tops and working on the tan. By early August I had become good friends with a cute looking fella that worked for the City of Lava Hot Springs, younger than me by a year or so I was somewhat surprised when he asked me out on what I would term “a real date”. Quite honestly, I’m not sure which one of us was more surprised when I agreed to go, after all…. a younger man and from a rival school??? We laugh now when he relates the story of how he almost lost hope of any budding romance because I didn’t seem to favor him and his co-workers kept telling him how I shot down everyone who had asked me out all summer. “But then” he likes to say “I was across the way mowing the park grass and glanced...

It was early July, well July 4th, 2007 to be exact. My home was near the fairgrounds a perfect place to view the firework show and hear the music. As well as the show and music it was also my soon to be fiance's birthday.(Mark Dahlquist) He wanted to have a big party so he invited all of his family as well as mine. Everyone showed up for a barbeque dinner and some delicious chocolate cake. I was just about to start eating when my soon to be sister in law demanded to have cake.(Brittney Dahlquist) I was starting to lose my temper because of the many questions that all involved eating cake and singing Happy Birthday. I soon gave in and prepared the candles. I walked outside and the first thing i saw was the huge smile on Mark's face. After we sang to him, he made his wish out loud so that everyone could hear.
"I wish Sheila would marry me!"
I was so surprised I couldnt stop smiling. I (Sheila Keller) replied.
"yes!"

On February 14th 2007 my husband now for almost a year and a half asked me to marry him. I made a nice dinner and then we were going to go to the mountains to look at the stars. So as we start to drive Owen said I need to make a stop at the church. So we drive to our church and go in and there is a red rose in a vase with baby breath on the piano. He sits down and pulls out a piece of paper then starts to play and sing. With such a heart of love he proposed to me as he sang and played the piano. I was so emotional I began to cry. He then finished the song and said, "who writes on yellow paper?” which is my brother. So my brother had written a poem to Owen when we were dating and gave it to him wanting him to propose. So Owen changed a couple things and made it into a song and also wrote the music on piano. He then got off the bench, comes up to me, reaches into his pocket, and grabs a ring. I said, "YES" and he put the ring on my finger. We then hugged and hugged for a long time. After we were...

On the morning of June 4th, 2008 I was supposed to be meeting my boyfriend Cory at his house because we were going to go and look for a new truck for him. When I got to his house he told me that he wanted to go drive up to Mink-Creek and see if the gate was open yet. So we head up there and sure enough the gate is open and we decide to drive in there and look around. We get about a mile into it and he decides that we need to turn around because of how muddy it was and the fact that it was still raining. So we turn around and he pulls off to the side of the road and turns off his truck. He then starts talking about our fishing trip that we were planning on taking that weekend at Chesterfeild Resivor. He goes on to tell me that his friend Danny told him about a lure that is guaranteed to catch any fish, I was thinking to myself whatever, he then told me that he bought him one and his mom told him that he should buy me one also since I was always buying him stuff, so then he looks at me and asks me if I want it,...

I think the most creative thing my husband ever did was come up with his proposal. It was about a week before Christmas and he kept telling me that there was an ornament on the tree for me. I thought "Yeah right" and looked for it once but never saw it. Then on Christmas morning I woke up and went to the living room and again he told me that there was an ornament on the tree for me. So I began my search and eventually found a ring box, my heart skipped a beat. He told me to sit down with it. I opened it and instead of a ring there was a paper folded and shaped like a ring that said "Read Me". So I unfolded it, he had written me a poem and told me how much he loved me. I started crying immediately and as I finished reading it he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Who could say no to that? We've been happily married for 5 and a half years now. I kept the poem and will never forget that day...

My husband and I took a fast track to marriage, despite our naturally cautious dispositions. We met on eHarmony—I had tried out the service and had been on a few unsuccessful dates and was ready to terminate my subscription. On the last day of my subscription, I received an email about a match. I figured, “Why not? I’ll take a look at who this person is.” I sent the match an email saying that it was my last day. He emailed me back on that same day, the first day of his subscription. We never looked back. A few dates in, my then-boyfriend took me on a mystery drive to Mink Creek. I was excited when I figured out that he was taking me there, as I’m originally from Kentucky, and I had been going there on drives occasionally by myself to remind me of the curvy roads and lush trees of my birthplace. On the drive, he asked me where I would like to live someday, and I said if I stayed in Idaho, Mink Creek would be the spot. He took me down a road and showed me a piece of land he had always hoped to live someday. Over...

Being a hopeless romantic I always dreamt that one-day I would be proposed to around Christmas time. Since I believe it’s the most romantic time of the year. I wished for a horse and sleigh to whisk us away to a secluded destination where “he” would pop the question. I would often tell my friends about my fairytale proposal and hoped it would some day come true. Little did I know that I would be living in Hawaii when the time came that I met my prince charming. I don’t believe there to be any horses that pull sleighs in Hawaii. But my wonderful husband secretly plotted with my friends and found out my dream proposal. He improvised and made it better than I could have hoped for.
March 2nd 2007 I unsuspectingly geared up to do something outdoorsy for a date that we had scheduled. He picked me up and told me that the date was going to be a surprise. While driving the normal speed limit, suddenly he swerved across traffic and headed to a horse ranch that was only a few miles from my house. “Surprise” he...

He was a welder at Bucyrus Erie. I was a teacher in Chubbuck.

We met at the Green T.

He called me, and asked me if I wanted to go to a movie. He told me what time, and said goodbye.

We went to see a film called Breaking Away. When he went to get popcorn, he brought back the theater-sized largest drink. We busted up laughing.

After that evening, he told me when he would call me again. He called, asked if I wanted to go a picnic, told me what time, and said goodbye.

That was why I said yes.

Well, that, and the giggling.

He spends his days now in the Pocatello railyard, working outside. Yesterday he told me he'd had a great time on every trip we have ever taken together.

He wants to go to Paris.

At night, I like the quiet clicking when he folds his glasses. When he's first awake in the morning, he wiggles his feet.

He writes me love notes on holidays.

Love, both lost and constant, is his steady adviser. To say yes was my great and continuing privilege.

Im sure my story is not that different from many others, but its very special to me and my hubby. Scott and I meet in Reno, Nv were we both lived at the time, he had been divorced for a few years, me I was coming out of a bad relationship. When I first meet him he drove me crazy, he could not talk to me with stumbling his words or just acting crazy. Then come the day that he "kidnapped" my 18 month son (not really), he took my son and went and gave him 2 oreo cookies and asked my son if he could date his mom, I was so upset that I could not find my son and mad at him that I did not want to go on a date with him, but eventaly I said ok, so we went on our first date May 11, 1999. I was soon to fall in love, he loved my son like he was his own and my son loved him..Scott and I had plans to go out on a date June 24, 1999 my mom was going to watch my son, so I sat at home and waited for Scott to come over so we could go out on our date as the time passed and he did not come home the matter I got, so when he come home...

Our engagement was but simple, but our love profound. Indeed, it has been said, “This is true love… you think this happens everyday?” (Princess Bride). And so begins our story. To adequately understand our mode of engagement, one must first understand our (short version) story.

I first laid eyes on Kyle as an eighth grader. Although there is only 3 ½ years between us, he was a senior in high school. I felt such a different feeling for him that I concealed it from even my closest friends, afraid of belittlement for love of a senior! Alas, in the summer he disappeared, and I was too scared to question his whereabouts. I found out a few years later he had been attending college at the U of I, and had just returned for a few months before leaving again, for church service.

And so my high school passed with never dating, writing, or hardly speaking to him, and yet my feelings could not be suppressed.

He returned as I had just graduated a trimester early from High school, which justified in his mind, an opportunity to...

We were high school sweethearts but we knew we were meant to be together. Brian and I had dated off and on for 2 years during high school. It was rough because he would spend his summers in Detroit Michigan and we missed those several months together, but he would right me a letter everyday while he was gone. The summer after I graduated from high school and he was about to turn 18, he somehow convinced his mom to let him stay here. On the 4th of July that summer he was in the Inkom parade dressed as Chester Chicken for the Village Mart where he worked. (I had to work and never got to see him, but it still makes me laugh to picture it!) Then he came to my house in Lava to watch the fireworks together. It seemed like a normal day! That night was a little off though. My mom had to work, but my dad just suddenly disappeared so we could watch the fireworks together. I went to get my favorite Mickey blanket and was so mad because I couldn't find it! After the fireworks Brian suggested a drive. He wouldn'...

It had been a cold and snowy January of 2007 and as we approached the middle of February it was time to get out of town. So we decided on a getaway to Island Park over President’s Day weekend. We were both excited to get away for 3 days. Me especially, since at the end of January I broke my ankle and wanted to just get away and relax. So off we go to Island Park arriving Thursday night, driving through a thickening blizzard to arrive at a snowy, snowy Island Park. Since the blizzard stayed all day Friday we were content being inside watching movies and the snow fall. Finally towards late afternoon the weather took a turn for the better and Lavelle suggested we should get out for a walk as there was a break in the snowy weather and the sun was shining brightly. So we bundled up, me and my ankle still in a walking cast, and headed off on our walk through the knee deep snow that has fallen overnight and through the previous week. We decided to stay on the trails the snow machines had packed so it would be...

Snow was coming down in small flurries. The five children we have from previous marriages (three from his, two from mine) were all at friends or family being taken care of. The car had been running for ten minutes to warm-up. And I was going on a date with my boyfriend Ethan. As anyone knows going on a date when you have five children takes a bit of planning. This makes it a rare opportunity, like Hailey’s comet, finding a pair of pants that fit and make me look good, or a man planning more than an hour in advance. Each seemingly to come around about once every eighty years, and I wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass me by.
Ethan had already reserved tickets to go to the Mystique Theatre to see the play “Scrooge”, a rendition of Charles Dickens play “A Christmas Carol.” We arrived early, had good seats close to the stage, but not close enough to be spit on by overzealous actors, and made small talk with the other guest around us. The meal was excellent and the acting was wonderful. The actors really got into...

Mitzi:
Why I said “Yes! Yes! Yes!” to Ryan when he asked me to marry him will become obvious if you read our story. This is OUR story, so we had to write it together. The story starts out with Ryan, and we jump back and forth as we share our story.

Ryan:
As most of you hopefully know, it sure is nice be honest if for no other reason than it saves you the trouble of having to keep track of all your stories and which ones you have told to who. What follows is OUR story of one time when the trouble (of not being honest) was worth it.
For those of you that know Reese Carter (Ryan’s dad) or Gay Belle Barker (Mitzi’s mom), you will probably be surprised to find that they are pretty good at lying through their teeth. It was all I could do, however, to keep from bursting out in laughter as they told Mitzi their stories of needing me to “run to Logan to get a picture of a house for a new agent that needed to get this insurance application in pronto,” or “really needing Mitzi to baby sit on Saturday...

The story of our relationship is quite unique and began while our parents were all in high school together. Our parents were friend during their school years and remain that way today. I had known of Tom my whole life, thought I didn't really get to know him until several years later. HE first asked me out ona date while I was working at Drag City Raceway and finally after having to reschedule our date three different times, we went on our very first date in June of 2006. After which I knew he was going to be my husband. On December 13, 2006, Tom and I had planned to take a weekend trip to Salt Lake to see the Christmas lights at Temple Square and just hang out. We had been dating for 9 months at the time and I was getting a little upset he hadn't asked me to marry him yet. He picked me up at work when I got off and we left for Salt Lake. Being winter, it was dark by the time we got there, the lights were lit up, it was snowing and it was cold. I didn't mind much because I was with the man I loved. We walked...

One night Brian, who I had been dating for one month, called me at work to say that he needed to go and see his grandmother and wanted me to come. I figured that something must be wrong with her because by the time I got off work it would be 9:30 at night and I knew that she lived far away out of town. When I got home Brian was waiting for me and we proceeded to take this old dark road to grandma's house. On the way Brian started talking about helping people and how good it feels to help someone. We were not even a fourth of the way there when we see this man walking along the road. He was wearing a black coat, a black ski cap, and he was limping. Brian stopped the car to see if he needed some help. The man said he wanted a ride to the next town to meet up with some friends of his. Brian asked me if we should help him and I remember just being speechless and kind of scared because it was late, dark, and this man looked scary. The next thing I know Brian has let this man in the car with us! The man was...

I dated my future wife for years...We were high school sweethearts. I was offered a football scholarship to play in Missouri after high school. Well I was madly in love with her and I could't stand to be away from her. I came back a few weeks later. I was gone from her for 3 weeks and knew I couldnt live without her. During my 23 hour drive I knew I needed to ask this women to marry me. I went up to the top of a local mountain and searched for the most perfect Aspen tree. After I found this tree, I carved in the tree " Amber will you marry me?" I waited a couple days and we went for a hike. We stopped at the spot and I pretended to mess with my pack. She saw the tree and stood there stunned. I dont think she realized it was "her" name. Then I went on one knee and asked her to marry me. She carved yes underneath the tree. Every year on our anniversary we go to "our tree" and carve a tally notch in the tree

I started off my Saturday Feb. 16, 2008 like any other, trying to get that extra little bit of sleep that I never get on weekdays. But at 8 am I awoke to an annoying man jumping onto my bed and who wouldn't let me get my beauty sleep. Louis was entirely too hyper all morning (for reasons unknown at the time) and he couldn't even finish the breakfast I had made. Strange, I thought, but when ISN'T he?
After a weird awakening, we were off to a day of skiing at Pebble with my wonderful parents and brothers. With a crisp fog and a chill in the air, I couldn't wait to hit the slopes. As usual, my snowboarding brother and boyfriend were going to start off the day together (or so I thought) hitting the jumps that only boarders enjoy. I had plans to hang out with my mom and dad, so I waited for my parents and sent the boys off to the lift.
On our way up the mountain into the fog some funny things happened. The lift stalled 4 different times; strange, I thought, but not completely out of the ordinary. My...

How I tied the knot

My wife and I had been dating for several months and we both knew we were the ones for each other. We had both agreed we were ready for the next step in our relationship, so me being a not so romantic person, I was on the search for the perfect proposal. I had tons of ideas but none of which fit our crazy relationship, and us but it finally came to me. We went ring shopping, (which really made me angry because I had no money to get her what she wanted) but I knew know what she liked. One day shortly after shopping around for rings it was snowing like crazy so I gave her a ride to work, After I dropped her off, a lady backed into my car and took off so I jumped out and chased her down, but to make it short, I got a check from her insurance company to fix my car. I new this would be the only time I could afford to get her the ring she wanted without going in tons of debt. So I shopped around and found and bought the ring that was totally her, clean and clear. Valentines was right around the...

I met my future husband, Morgan Hencley in 1958 when I was only eleven years old. It was love at first sight but I was too young so I waited. We dated a little and then Morgan joined the U.S. Navy in 1962. In the fall of 1963 he started writing to me. He was stationed in Whidbey Island, awaiting to be assigned his ship, the U.S.S. Ticonderoga. It would become the first ship to fire against the enemy during the Viet Nam conflict. He wrote me a letter to say that he was calling me to ask a very important question and to make sure not to miss his call. I thought he was going to ask me to go steady and I got nervous. I was in the middle of writing him a letter to tell him that 15 was too young to go steady. while I was writing the letter his call came. On that phone call he asked me to marry him. I was too embarrassed to say no, I’m too young, so I said yes! In December he officially proposed! by then I was 16, but my dad said I was still too young! He came home in march, just before the ship was leaving for Viet...

I met Kyle while working at Great American Video in 2003, I had actually known him a long time but never talked to him. But while working there we decided to go out a few times on some dates. Then he made it official as boyfriend and girlfriend on Dec. 10 2003. I had come home from a trip and he had rose petals leading from the stairs to my bedroom and he was standing there with a dozen roses and then asked me to be his girlfriend...... I said yes... That's not the best part.... Kyle and I dated for 3 years before he popped the question.....On April 11, 2006 I had come home from a trip and he said that he was going to pick my family and I up from the airport, well his mom was standing there when we go to the airport with a rose and said "Kyle is sorry that he couldn't pick you guys up he had to work, but he wanted me to give you this rose!" How sweet of my boyfriend. Well we had gotten home and when I got to the stairs of my house, there was a trail of rose petals from the stairs to my bedroom. I thought he is...

David and I met at a Singles Family Home Evening. He said hi to me at church and always called me by name but for the life of me I couldn't remember his name. Well, he finally got up the nerve to ask me out and pretty much from that day on we only dated each other. Well, I was Saturday, October 24, 2005, and one of his friends was having a Halloween party and I was told I had to go because we were dating, I really didn't care for costume parties then, so my Mom told me that I should just break up with him for the day so that I wouldn't have to go to the party and then we could just start going out again the next day. I took the day off from work so that we could spend the whole day together. David decided that he wanted to go for a hike up into a spring nearby where he lived. I agreed. So I drove out to his house and we loaded everything into his parents little Nissan truck and headed for the trail. When we arrived at the trail head in the truck we got out and started up the trail. About 20 feet from the truck...
